    • Exit 131 is the old exits 18 & 20. For more information about the Exit Renumbering project, visit MassDOT’s newmassexits.com site

  • Turnpike Westbound (outbound): left lane closed from the Prudential Tunnel to just past Mass Ave.

  • Install of median foundations continues including deliveries and material removal to support the work. Refer to the Work Hours & Night Work section below for more details.

NEWBURY ST I-90 ON-RAMP

  • On Sunday 1/10 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Newbury Street on-ramp will be closed for key utility work. More details available on the Current Construction Updates page

  • Additional periods of nighttime closures may be required for utility work throughout these two weeks.

ON SITE

  • Continued foundation installation and site grading. On the street side of the site, this work will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. There will also be work overnight adjacent to the Commuter Rail; more details in ‘Night Work’ below.

  • Utility work continues within the site on Newbury Street, including making connections to street utilities.

WORK HOURS & NIGHT WORK

Typical work hours on-site will be Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the majority of the work.

Nighttime work will continue in the highway and along the railway, in double shifts based on safety and logistical constraints. This minimizes the duration of the work, and the contractor is taking steps to mitigate noise from demolition by doing as much work during daytime hours as possible. This includes:

  • Install of median foundations will continue the week of 1/10 for several weeks within the highway work zone, on double shifts ranging from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

  • Loading and unloading of the work zone will continue overnight as needed between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Noise levels should not be significantly louder than existing highway traffic for this activity.

  • Overnight installation of a separation wall along the railroad tracks will continue between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The project team has implemented several noise mitigation strategies prior to commencing this phase of the work. Sustained night time work along the railroad tracks is not anticipated once the separation wall is in place. This work is planned to be complete in mid-January.

  • UPCOMING WORK: Demolition of the existing bus shelter on the Mass Ave Bridge is being planned and will require overnight work over the highway for approximately 10 nights, before the end of January. The timing is being coordinated with MassDOT and more detail will be provided once the start date is finalized.

Workhours are coordinated with MassDOT and with MBTA and are subject to change based on weather. Check back here every two weeks for the latest information.

MBTA BUS STOP RELOCATION

As of 9/12, the MBTA bus stop at Mass Ave @ Newbury Street (Hynes Convention Center) has been moved to a temporary bus stop one block south at the corner of Mass Ave and Boylston Street. The new shelter and temporary sidewalk are installed, and MBTA signage will direct passengers to the temporary relocated stop throughout construction.

COMPLETED WORK

Over the last two weeks, work in the highway continued, including installation of building foundations. On site, construction activities included foundation installation, soil excavation, and continued installation of utility connections to the site from Boylston and Newbury Streets.
