The demolition of the old MBTA bus shelter structure at Mass Ave is underway and has made substantial progress. Because this work involves demolition over the active highway, it must be carried out at night and with westbound lane closures, to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
We are mitigating noise as much as possible and have been doing as much preparatory work during the day as we can safely perform. We appreciate your patience during this short-term but necessary phase, which must be completed before building the new deck.
Timing: ongoing — expected completion within next two weeks (weather dependent)
Weekdays, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Friday & Saturday nights, between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Work: The structure of the bus shelter will be removed, including cutting steel and removing concrete. Because this work is taking place over an active highway, it cannot be done without lane closures on I-90 Westbound to ensure safety and minimize impacts to the traveling public.
Overnight traffic impacts: Over the next two weeks, the project team will continue to work with the State Police to institute nightly lane closures and periodic rolling roadblocks on I-90 Westbound to perform work safely. If you need to travel the Turnpike outbound from Boston overnight during this work, please build in extra time for your trip.
Two-lane closures will create a safe workzone for demolition activities including cutting and removal of steel and concrete. These closures will be cleared each morning. Rolling roadblocks are also expected for short periods overnight, slowing traffic to create a safe and clear workzone for operations like removing the blue steel beam pictured above.
As with all workzones, drivers traveling through the area should reduce speed, use caution, and pay attention to signage. All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be impacted due to an emergency.
