Week of 2/13

I-90 Westbound Workzone Changes Week of 2/21

Overnight Work to Remove Barriers

Next week, we will replace the concrete barriers with barrels along the westbound Turnpike workzone. Drivers will still see a workzone in place through the Parcel 12 site as this becomes an extension of the Parcel 7 workzone. The work is not expected to be loud compared to background highway noise and we will work to manage and minimize noise as much as we can.

Weekly Status Summary

This past week, we started building the deck structure above I-90 Eastbound by erecting prefabricated structural steel pieces. This work will remain ongoing and only occur at night with temporary slowdowns on the highway. For more details, see our Construction Updates page.

On site, interior foundation and core work remains ongoing in both the Boylston and Newbury Street parcels. On the highway, we will begin replacing concrete barriers with barrels this week in order to demobilize our permanent workzone and extend Parcel 7’s. Limited noise is expected overnight while we continue concrete wall repairs within the Mass Ave Tunnel. This activity can only occur overnight, so we will minimize and mitigate noise as much as possible. We will continue erecting steel during second shift within the Boylston Street parcel.

Detailed Look-Ahead

TURNPIKE & TRAVEL

  • Steel erection, Turnpike Eastbound (inbound): between 11:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m., prefabricated steel beams will be installed over the highway one by one. This installation will only occur overnight when periodic “rolling roadblocks” can be used along with nightly lane closures. Police will periodically slow traffic so that no cars pass under the deck while the construction crew places each beam. Turnpike on-ramps will be temporarily closed while these “rolling roadblocks” are in place. After each beam is placed and secured, traffic will be allowed to move normally.

  • Turnpike Eastbound (inbound): the slow-speed (right) lane workzone has now been shortened back to Charlesgate Park bridge, and is open through the Parcel 12 site.

  • Turnpike Westbound (outbound): slow-speed (right) lane will remain closed from the Prudential Tunnel to just past Beacon St, after the concrete barriers are replaced with barrels this week. This closure will allow for safe and continuous set-ups for Parcel 7, the neighboring project to the west, called Fenway Center.

  • Overnight single-lane closures are expected on the Turnpike, requiring closures of the Newbury Street on-ramp. We will post dates on Construction Updates once confirmed by MassDOT.

  • The second stage of deck support wall construction is nearing completion on the Turnpike. We’ve finished shortening the Eastbound workzone, and will complete the last remaining items in the Westbound workzone.

  • Please continue to move carefully through the workzones: pay extra attention to your speed, lane markings, traffic signage, barriers, and any police or construction workers you see.

ON SITE

  • Work within the Boylston Street site includes continuation of the concrete elevator core walls, slab-on-grade and deck pours, and erection of structural steel.

  • Concrete core operations within the Boylston Street site will be ongoing from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. during weekdays. Noise will be limited, and we will utilize white-noise back-up alarms during material delivery.

  • Installation of underground plumbing and electrical will continue throughout the Boylston and Newbury Street sites.

  • Work on site will continue within the Newbury Street parcel, including interior foundations and preparing to begin the concrete elevator core walls.

  • Preparations to erect the Newbury St parcel tower crane will continue during this period.

OVERNIGHT WORK

Nighttime work will continue in the highway, along the railway, and within the Boylston Street site along the railroad tracks where required for safety and logistical reasons. The project is taking all appropriate steps to avoid and mitigate noise from demolition. Upcoming overnight work includes:

  • As detailed above, steel erection to build the deck over the Turnpike will occur between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Limited noise should be expected, but installation is not expected to be loud compared to background highway noise. We will work to manage and minimize noise as much as we can.

  • To prepare for installing light fixtures and fire protection lines along the existing concrete walls under the Mass Ave Bridge, we will continue repairs of the existing bridge concrete walls during rail shutdowns. Because of limited windows for rail track access, this operation will be completed overnight. Minor noise is expected within the tunnel, and we will remain diligent about providing mitigation measures to control the impact to the neighborhood.

  • Installation of electrical equipment along the new foundation wall adjacent to the rail tracks and the Boylston St. parcel will continue.

  • Restoration of the Westbound slow-speed fixed workzone will continue this week: removing concrete barriers and fencing, and general clean-up. Minimal noise is expected.

  • Removal of material and unloading of the workzone will continue overnight within the Westbound Turnpike workzone. This work requires travel lane closures that cannot occur during the day.

  • Loading and unloading of the construction area at the Newbury Street on-ramp will continue overnight and in the early morning to support the ongoing foundation activities.

Always check the Construction Updates page for the latest information and scheduled activities. Workhours are coordinated with MassDOT and with MBTA and are subject to change based on weather.

OTHER NEARBY WORK

Construction and maintenance work unrelated to this project continues in the area. This includes local utility and street work, rehabilitation of portions of the Dalton Street bridge and nearby highway barriers, other construction projects along I-90 and in the neighborhood, and routine road maintenance. These other construction activities may have noise and/or traffic impacts that are not covered in these BuildP12 project updates. We will strive to provide information about these as a courtesy wherever possible.
